Excellent point. Off the cuff declarations are hardly binding. Incidentally, pursuant to your point about terms being explicit: suppose that someone asks a woman to "go steady", and several months later breaks up with her, not because of anything between them, but because his parents don't care for her, and he is tired of having arguments about it. Not only would most people consider it sufficient cause, but no one would deny his right to break up with her, even if they thought that he had acted precipitously. Certainly, no one would go so far as to suggest that the agreement to "go steady" could only be terminated by mutual consent or a breach (by the woman), and no one who was not mentally challenged would suggest that it was legally enforceable, to stay in the relationship.
