So you can call me a rural backwater hick... but Henry Thoreau went to Walden Pond to get away from the broadband of his day....why should we try to improve on his model? Your error is thinking that the world shares your Luddite tendencies. The majority is rushing toward these technologies rather than running from them. They are embracing them because they better their lives, pure and simple. Even if your personal tastes are for less technology, you shouldn't assume others share your tastes - a mistake we all make (My personal one; how can Star Wars be popular?). The technology genie is out of the bottle and can't be put back in. As the world grows wealthier - as in inevitably will - people will buy more and more products with electronics in them. It may take a while to hit impoverished Africa, but the vast majority of the world's population now lives in countries that are on the path to economic growth. They will be buying sooner rather than later.
