Don't blame this on "environmentalists"... rational environmentalists have been calling for a restoration of the natural fire cycle since the '50s. If you are looking for someone to blame, I'd say that 'suburbanites' wanting to protect their little slice of Bambi-inspired heaven without understanding the natural ecological cycles in the West, until very recently the Forest Service itself... adhering to obsolete theory of 'what is natural', and brain-dead and self destructive land use decisions made by local (developer dominated) zoning boards all are better candidates for a share of the blame.
