Customers Look to Increased Performance PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2002--SAS and Intel Corporation today announced that the latest release of SAS® software will soon be available for servers based on the forthcoming Intel® Itanium® 2 processor.
Release 9.0 of SAS software, expected to be available this summer, will be among the first enterprise software packages to be commercially available for the Itanium 2 processor.
Release 9.0 of SAS has been optimized for Itanium 2-based systems. A number of SAS customers, including Wells Fargo and Cornell University, are already running pilot Itanium 2-based systems with SAS software.
"Wells Fargo has been running SAS solutions for CRM and other key business areas on an Intel Itanium processor-based server for over a year now, and we've been impressed with its speed in processing very large volumes of customer and other data," said Savvas Papaiacovou, vice president and manager of customer-based MIS at Wells Fargo. "We are in the very early stages of testing SAS on a new Itanium 2-based system and look forward to the increased performance." Wells Fargo, based in San Francisco, is a $312 billion diversified financial-services company providing banking, investments, insurance, mortgage, and consumer finance.
Carol Murphree, computing consulting services manager at the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research (CISER) at Cornell University is working with Intel and SAS to solve ever-increasing problem sizes. "In supporting social science research at Cornell University, we are constantly looking for ways to provide our researchers with systems that are both cost effective and powerful. We support some very sophisticated SAS users who have repeatedly hit the limits of 32-bit systems and single-threaded applications. We are very excited about being able to provide these researchers the opportunity to take advantage of the increased headroom of Itanium 2-based systems and the multi-threaded capabilities of SAS Version 9. We anticipate that the combination of Intel and SAS products and support will give us just what we need for increased performance and faster solutions."
SAS will release a production version of Release 9.0 on both the Microsoft Windows 64-bit and HPUX 11i operating systems for Itanium 2-based servers later this summer. Intel plans to introduce the Intel Itanium 2 processor mid-year.
"For more than a decade, SAS and Intel have worked together to ensure that SAS solutions are optimized to take advantage of the enhanced performance and features of new Intel server platforms, and that new Intel offerings are designed to meet the high-end computing needs of enterprise customers," said Keith Collins, senior vice president and chief technology officer at SAS. "In the last year, this cooperation has been reinforced through joint research and development at the SAS Intel Advanced Research Center. Testing in the Center has shown that the forthcoming Itanium 2-based platform will boost performance by 50 to 100 percent or more over existing Itanium-based platforms, providing the extra headroom for large datasets and I/O that is needed for enterprise SAS solutions."
The SAS Intel Advanced Research Center was created last year to conduct advanced research on emerging technologies, seeking to provide best-in-class performance, ease of installation, and maximum scalability of SAS solutions on Intel-based servers. This research helps ensure that SAS' enterprise business intelligence solutions take advantage of the performance and scalability enhancements of current and future Intel-based platforms and technologies. These include the Itanium processor family, Intel Xeon(TM) processor family, Hyper-Threading Technology, and I/O specifications for servers, among others.
"Organizations today must transform vast quantities of customer, supply-chain, financial, quality and other data into intelligence for effective decision-making and competitive advantage," said Mike Fister, senior vice president and general manager of the enterprise platforms group at Intel. "Thousands of organizations rely on SAS software solutions to power key business functions like customer relationship management and supplier relationship management, and matching this software with the computational power, massive data processing and scalability that Itanium 2-based systems offer will make for an incredible offering to SAS' customers."
The announcement came at the SAS European Users Group International (SeUGI) 20 conference in Paris, attended by more than 2,000 SAS customers from around the world. SAS and Intel will showcase Release 9.0 of SAS software running on Itanium 2-based servers at SeUGI.
