Interesting news out of Merrill. Our bears may correctly perceive this as a negative for QCOM, and indeed if PCS finances deteriorate to the point that the 1X rollout is delayed or compromised, it would be very bad, and we would all have to begrudgingly give our friend robv his due.

There is another interpretation, perhaps more long-term in its implications, that can only work to QCOM's benefit. A north American carrier market in such a shaky financial condition cannot for long afford the luxury of making technology choices on the basis of anything other than economics.

If 1x proves to be the cash cow for V and PCS that its been in Asia, just how long can the others survive on the empty promises of GPRS/EDGE/UMTS.

If that happens, the non 1X-ers can no longer hide under the cloak that this is an industry problem. It will quickly become apparent that theirs is a technology problem.

Of course, if 1X flops and flounds in the US, even if its due entirely to carrier incompetence.....
