Sometimes these two techniques ('managed', but natural fire cycle... and timber sales) achieve complimentary goals... but the devil is in the details. Clear cuts only promote subsequent overgrowth... but thinning trees to restore natural spacing (but not by only taking out only climax growth) can be a very productive and sustainable technique. There IS a happy medium.
