if the player(s) have accepted the challenge and having being selected, and then they must perform. There is no alternative, nor excuses.

Some players, notably Germany's Stefan Effenberg, have taken the step of retiring from international football. There's a huge amount of pressure on both players and coaches, though. If a famous player backs out, or is not selected, they get publicly pilloried. If they get selected and perform at less than peak level, they get pilloried as well. A hard situation to manage.

Starting the tournament a few weeks later would have made a big difference.
