JEB,

The key difference between 1944 and 2002 is that back then we were on the moral high ground, fighting against totalitarian militarism.

Today, the U.S. is exceedingly militarized, and slouching toward totalitarianism at every turn of the political road.

We currently spend more on war than the next twenty nations combined. Is this healthy? Is this sane? I don't think so.

Our civil liberties, the very thing we were fighting WW II to preserve are being stripped away from us by the likes of the extremist fundamentalist lunatic John Ashcroft.

I think it is vastly more important to focus on the clear and present danger that the present Administration poses to our collective future than to dwell on atrocities visited upon our soldiers seventy years ago.

Furthermore, there is a body of thought that feels that MacArthur was culpable for a much bigger loss of manpower than a more prudent military strategist would have permitted to happen. It's clear to me that MacArthur underestimated the capacity of the enemy, and then shifted the focus of his operations away from the rescue of POWs and his error resulted in thousands of needless deaths.
