Gordon,

You are confused, or else willfully distorting the discussion of the estate tax. What we really are discussing is an income tax on future generations, i.e. heirs and successors. Taxation of a capital gain that generally the heirs had no hand in creating.

Here is a 5 1/2 minute segment on this morning's NPR Weekend Edition, interviewing William S. Gates, Sr. on the social benefit of maintaining estate taxes:
