Lorne, the other day I went to a wedding of my Vietnamese friend. He was getting married here in the US. It was quite an experience. I felt like I was in Vietnam. People talking Vietnamese, even the DJ kept talking Vietnamese all the time. And I had a wonderful time, even though I did not follow a lot of what they were saying.

When I first came to the US, within 2 months of my landing here, I went to visit a Irish friend. His parents showed up in green. I thought that they were strange folks to be coming to a party in the same colored clothes. Soon I was part of the revelry to celebrate St. Patrick's day, green beer and all that. First time in my life.

And then my sister-in-law hails from a family of Italian immigrants, 12 brothers and sisters, very loud party types and a distinct unity of their own. Where else but in the US we have have such multicultural diversity and interesting way of life.

As I indicated earlier, I grew up with some Jewish families. But it was only after I came to the US that I learnt of the Jewish festival of Hannukah etc. Growing up, to me around that time of the year it was all Christmas lights, with my Jewish friends having a very interesting design for Christmas lights.

So the practice of multiculturalism is good. If we fail to practice it the right way such that it causes more harm than good then we need to educate ourselves to practice it the right way. But I would not lament (which I presume you are doing).
