Lorne, I think you got it a little mixed up here. My response that you refer to was me butting in on an exchange you were having with others on 9 year olds marrying old men etc.

While on that subject, let me also add that when the British colonialized the Indo-Pak subcontinent, the practice of child-marriage was very prevalent in the sub-continent. It is cultural and has nothing to do with religion. That aspect of child marriage took on a different tone, when young girls were getting married off to older well settled men. It was purely for economic reasons. And to stop that from happening (younger girls geting married to old men for economic security for life, the practice of 'sati' set in to discourage that to some extent.

So my point is that we cannot claim to have an intelligent excahnge or discussion without recognizing the social history of such practices. And there are people there who ridicule the high divorce rate here in the US. But we also need to be informed, that instances of wife beating in those countries are very high but divorce rates are lowere than in the US. So what can we conclude from this: you damn well right, there are very unhappy marriages than meets the eye in those countries.
