As a result the more closely a Moslem regime is associated with the West, the more it looks illegitimate (like a foreign agent) to many of its subjects. The Shah's Iran is a perfect example.

Typical. You cite a regime that actually was a foreign agent, and then dismiss this for other reasons. There is a good reason that the reformers in Iran, who want to Westernize and get rid of the backward "Khomeinis", are strident in their reminders that Iran wants to remain independent of Western manipulation.

Islam produces militant and intolerant cultures.

Conveniently misleading. Islam is only (or best) outlet people have in these societies to vent their criticism of the government. They have genuine complaints about these illegitimate governments that we install and/or prop up.
