Cats give lots of people the heebie jeebies

We really should quit using that expression. Perfectly good expression, but too much local history.

They give me the feeling that the cat would be happy to tear me to shreds if it could, just like their cousins the tigers would

Yes, and the way they stalk and play with their prey evokes a kind of primal fear. They can have a spooky quality about them.

Of course, few house kitties would hurt anyone, just like companion dogs, though the ancestors of both would have us for dinner in a heartbeat. And a dog bred and trained to fight would make mince meat out of your darlings, you, and me. The fear of cats is much more imagined than real. Particularly since they're so small. But fear isn't always rational.
