My kids had all kinds of educational opportunities that I never had: French beginning in the 4th grade, chance to study abroad in high school, the chance to participate in the extremely demanding International Baccalaureate program, a wide assortment of extra-curricular activities. Why doesn't Johnny value education? Because his parents don't value education. Schools haven't let society down. Society has let the education system down. And I ain't just talking about inner-city kids.
