I belong here: goldprospectors.org;

Kerry, I've been meaning to get back to you on this. What is your weapon of choice for gold prospecting in the desert? Dry washer, or metal detector?

FYI, I spent the afternoon at a GPAA-sponsored event with dozens of folks mucking and fossicking about on the banks of a thundering glacial stream in a beautiful mountain valley. They were using picks, shovels, pans, sluices, high-bankers, dredges, and metal detectors.

Experienced dredgers with the right equipment and access can pull out an ounce or two a day, but the annual window is pretty short. It requires crawling around on the bottom of a cold Alaskan stream in October wearing a dry suit and using a snorkel. During the rest of the year the water is too high and turbid.

I think if I ever take up this hobby I will use a metal detector and work on dry land.
