VTM television said Belgian investigators believed the audacious haul by four robbers of five trunks of diamonds at Brussels airport in October 2000 had gone to fund al-Qaeda and Afghanistan's former Taliban regime. It said the investigators believed Nizar Trabelsi, a Tunisian arrested late in 2001 in Brussels and suspected of planning an attack on the US embassy in Paris, was linked to the robbery. The raids were carried out in Brussels and the nearby towns of Vilvoorde, Wavre and Nivelles, VTM said.
