REH, Happy to see a Fund very interested in OCCF but so far his track record isn't great. (to put it mildly) Also with only 6.5 Million in Assets, it is not really a big deal. Thanks for the post, though. I still hope to make money on OCCF. Jim

Small-Cap Funds Are the Craze

Investing in small-cap stocks is getting harder by the day.

So much new money has poured into small-company funds -- particularly small value funds -- that many are now closed to new investors. And it seems as if another hot fund shuts its door every week.

That sudden surge in popularity forced Fidelity to close that fund on Thursday to new investors for the next six months. And this Fidelity fund is just one of many that recently have cut off the flow of money from new investors. The Buffalo Small Cap fund closed in mid-April. Only two of six Wasatch stock funds are still open to new investors. And the list keeps growing. ........

Here's a checklist to keep handy if you're on the lookout for a solid small-stock fund. Here's what you want to avoid. ........

Big and Bloated......

A Positive Return, but a Bad Record
A small-cap fund might be sporting a positive return, but upon closer inspection its record could, in fact, be dreadful. You have to compare a small-stock fund's performance with its peer group and a relevant benchmark -- such as the Russell 2000 and not the S&P 500.

Indeed, the Polynous Growth fund has the worst three-year record of any small-cap value fund tracked by Morningstar. But its three-year annualized return of negative 5.5% is almost dead even with the Vanguard 500 Index fund's negative 5.4% return for the same period.
