All the parties know that if the students perform the students should be given grades commensurate with their work effort.

For a few years when I was in grammar school, we were graded on effort. Fortunately, that didn't last long. Did you really mean that? Later you said that the assignment would be graded on how well it met the terms of the contract, which makes more sense to me.
