but it is your job to show the student
It was my job to to show the student how to find things out for himself. It was my job to show the student what he had to do to pass the course; i.e., to fulfill the requirements, which would translate into "Satisfactory," or a grade of C.
It was not my job to show the students how to perform at a level of high distinction, except to offer suggestions in a very general way.
I was preparing students for careers in business. I would have been doing them a disservice to give them the idea that you can just ask the boss, "What am I expected to do?", then do it ... and expect someday to be the boss yourself. And I think this is true in government, medicine, or virtually any career or occupation, including education itself.
No one is going to "show you" how to excel in a competitive environment. That has to come from within yourself, as a function of your intelligence, drive, skills, and creativity.
Everyone can't get to the top, or be the winner, or get the A's, certainly not just by doing what you're told to do, and it is never too early to learn that.
