<Put into perspective, the human obsession with collecting and storing shiny metal seems completely assinine.>

Ray, Gold was good for hunter-gatherer and agricultural communities when found wealth was the primary wealth available and defeat of neighbouring tribes in territorial genocidal conflict was the norm.

Gold is irrelevant for communities which get value from abstract created wealth, private property, voluntary exchange of value and security and contract enforcement provided by community-selected governments.

The changes have been subtle and slow [compared with a person's life] so the importance of the transition has escaped most people. Life has many Aztec attributes still, sadly. But the Photon-Phragmenter software-defined humans are ascendant over Neanderthals, stone age, metal age, industrial age, electronic age people. KDDI Au is replacing Aztec Au.

But as 1979 showed, gold can still do a spike and it still has $300 an ounce in value, so Aztecs are not out of business yet. Communities just need to ensure the Aztecs don't despoil conditions for others with their cyanide and arsenic and whatever else they do.
