I SO agree with you. My husband and I talk about that so often now that our oldest is in middle school. She has been given extremely complex assignments that she could not have done without our help. One of her science projects, to build a working arm with all the correct parts, was difficult even for my husband. He built a beautiful arm and we just shook our heads when he only got a B. My husband is a software engineer, we figure the mechanical engineer moms and dads took the A's. But seriously, isn't it bad enough that some kids don't have two parents, and some don't have any college educated parents. Those children are already penalized, and yet with these projects we make them feel even worse- by grading them on the enthusiasm and resources of their family.

It is desperately unfair Neo. I would never assign such projects myself. I also make sure I allow time at the end of every day for children to look over their homework, so they can come ask me questions, because I know some of them will not be able to ask anyone for help when they get home.
