Lorne, you are right here also. I heard people say that you are not a Muslim if you do not know how to read Arabic. Since the Koran was written in Arabic, a true Muslim should be in a position to read it in Arabic and then translate it the way he or she wants to and not read somebody else's translation.

Have you heard of the B'hai faith. If yes, then wouldn't you say that it is an offshoot of Islam, it is not in competiton of Islam, it does not denigrate Islam, but its followers puts Islam in a modern day perspective.

So yes when Mohammed founded his faith, he was looking to having as his followers the bedouins in his immediate geograhical neighborhood and it was primarily to counter pagan worship, idol worship and nothing else.
