I didn't say professors don't have the desire to motivate.

I said it was not their responsibility to motivate students. Let's remember that professors have obligations beyond the classroom and beyond the university. They have responsibilities for furthering their disciplines through research, and thus adding to the body of accumulated knowledge. Many professors are passionate about their subject fields, and eager to transmit that enthusiasm to students. However, it would be an egregious waste of resources to expect professors to spend their time trying to get students off their arses to put in the necessary effort to get good grades. It is up to the student to realize what a golden opportunity they have been given, and to make the most of it.

Cooling things off a bit -- here is another angle on grading in college. This is about what has happened at Williams College, where the shoe is on the other foot, and the students do the evaluating of the faculty. If you think professors leave something to be desired in grading, check out how the students do at it.

This won't copy and paste, so I can only give the link.
