FSB: FORTUNE Small Business Ranks America's 100 Fastest-Growing Small Companies
Second Annual List Places NYFIX of Stamford, CT at No. 1
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 2002--NYFIX, a firm which develops electronic trading systems for brokerage firms, banks, and global exchanges, debuted at No. 1 on FSB: FORTUNE Small Business' second annual list of the 100 Fastest-Growing publicly held small businesses in America.

One of 19 technology companies on the list, NYFIX developed a network that allows institutional traders to buy and sell equities off the major markets. With clients including Morgan Stanley and Lehman Brothers, NYFIX's system was an immediate success, boosting the firm's 2001 revenues 75%. Dynacq International, a Houston, TX company that runs surgery centers and a home healthcare service, ranked No. 2, up one spot from last year; an anime toy licenser, 4Kids Entertainment of New York City, ranked No. 3; Quicksilver Resources of Fort Worth, TX, which specializes in unconventional sources of natural gas, ranked No. 4; and Catalyst Semiconductor, based in Sunnyvale, CA, a company that makes programmable chips for communication products, came in at No. 5. Rounding out the top ten on FSB's list are: Key Production of Denver, CO at No. 6; CompuDyne of Hanover, MD at No. 7; Asta Funding of Englewood Cliffs, NJ at No. 8; Evergreen Resources of Denver, CO at No. 9; and Panhandle Royalty of Oklahoma City, OK at No. 10 (complete list is attached).

Companies were ranked based on three criteria, averaged to create the final list: earnings growth, revenue growth, and stock performance over the past three years. The 2002 FSB 100 includes 65 new companies. Combined, the companies on the list produced just over $1 billion in net income in 2001 while employing only 49,696 people. Many industries are evenly represented among the list with tech firms leading at 19% of the companies listed, 18% are financial firms, 16% health care, and 13% industrial. California, for the second year, tops the list of states with the most FSB 100 businesses with 21 companies, followed by New York with eleven, Texas with ten and Colorado with seven. Compiled with help from Zachs Investment Research, the FSB 100 list took into consideration only companies traded on major exchanges with $200 million or less in annual revenue and with a stock price above $1.

In related stories, writer Andrew Rafalaf introduces the FSB 100 cover package with an examination of how these companies found success in the current economy in "The Tough Get Growing"; Carlye Adler, an FSB writer, takes a look at one of the biggest and most successful security companies in the world, CompuDyne--No. 7 on the list--in the article "Safe and Sound"; Brian O'Keefe reports on the status of the companies on last year's FSB 100 in "Where Are They Now?"; and as the Enron scandal unfolds and the SEC cracks down on business accounting practices, FSB contributor Daniel Roth presents five rules for companies to follow to prove that their numbers are clean in "Under the Microscope."

The July/August issue of FSB: FORTUNE Small Business is available on newsstands beginning July 1.
