Their first allegiance (legally and morally) is to the Canadian Family...
Legally? You have a law that requires them to sell to Canadians even if the Canadians offer less?

I'd call this socialist groupthink.

"The US had to go through some wrenching changes on the way to its current position"

I understand that...

And look where it has led! You don't get here with socialist groupthink.

"If the US gov't has any intention of taking any Canadian territory, it's not apparent."

They would only do so under extreme need.

Actually, I can imagine some extreme situations when it could happen. If Canada were invaded, say.

I was speaking of mutual deal making. I am sure it will come within 15 years...
Canada will break apart within 15 years? That sounds awfully pessimistic. The country appears to be pretty stable in spite of Quebec. There are advantages to all Canadians in keeping the nation together.

"that is true of any reasonably free and democratic society- -including yours."

Yep. That is what I just said. Canada takes a more collective approach. I suspect the optimum response is somewhere in the middle. I learned a long time ago to trust the wisdom of the common people...

The common people can be total idiots too. The common people of Germany wholeheartedly supported Hitler in 1941.

But they try to (fair enough).
In a capitalistic system they are supposed to try. That makes it work. There obviously have to be limits on just WHAT they can try to do, obviously. Blowing up your competitors plants (as Rockefeller most likel did) is verboten.

I am referring not only to what is earned...but to what is shared. I believe that intelligent sharing prevents a great deal of loss through crime, prison, etc. We cannot escape the fact that many are constitutionally weak and of little value to economic society. It is foolish to pay for these people to live in prison and to contemplate new harm against us.
Much of what you refer to was tried in this country- -the Great Society. Even most of the liberals here now consider it to have been a failure. It produced generation after generation living on welfare. It encouraged family instability. And it cost countless billions and drained the economy.
