U.S. Postal Service Irradiation Process May Affect Some Gemstones

This is a well known quantum mechanical effect in crystal lattices, the technical term is "color centers" if you want to do a Google or other search.

I hadn't heard that any Postal radiation was intense enough to cause this though and kind of doubt they're going to widely use radiation intense enough to cause a problem.
