I certainly has worked for them, at least so far. It's what IBM did for a long time (and still does to a certain extent -- old habits die hard). The problem for the company is that it makes them less able to really compete, since they are used to having everything their own way. MSFT has has very little success getting into markets where they can't use their unfair advantage. In fact, they've done so poorly at that, that people that believe they are "great" might want to consider this as a way of getting a different perspective on MSFT.

The worst part is how hard it is to avoid their lousy software, and how really bad it is. In the same time that Linux has gone from being a toy to a really full-featured, robust (although still somewhat difficult to use) O/S, NT has gone from being a flaky machine hog to being a really flaky, byzantine machine hippo. Perhaps the combination of Mac OSX and Linux will gradually push MSFT into making their crap a little better...
