You're setting up a false dichotomy.

Was Socrates a sharp mind continually pushing the frontiers of learning and knowledge, or was he a great teacher?

The answer, clearly, is yes and yes.

IMO those who groan when their teaching load is increased from 3 to 6 hours a week shouldn't be in the classroom at all.
