< I really think it would have worked to nod, had the fascists in the OSU administration not demanded that all peace signs be removed from the mortar boards before the speech.>

Well, I do like to give people the benefit of the doubt. The USA is somewhat schizophrenic about their vaunted freedom. Suppose they'd simply bowed their heads without the peace symbols [or reach up, stick a little white piece of paper on their mortar-board before bowing].

This is quite funny and reminds me of the way China handles dissent. It was hilarious to watch China's 50th celebrations and the straight-backed, straight-faced audience when Jiang Zemin made a speech. It really did look funny and was only a step or two removed from what you describe. It's reminiscent of the rows of Moslems kneeling and bowing towards Mecca while the religious police keep a close eye on proceedings to ensure nobody steps out of line.

To be arrested, removed and prosecuted for bowing with a piece of white Post-it sticky paper on one's mortar board would be a more effective point about fascism than standing and blocking people, which is undoubtedly an aggressive act.

Defiance should be a defence of one's freedom, not a trespass against somebody else's freedom.
