Actually, that is precisely the goal of many research-oriented professors. If you are productive enough as a researcher, you can come pretty darn close. It is not as selfish as it may sound. The mission of the University is to create knowledge, as well as to transmit it. Faculty settle into their niches, on whichever side. Departments in a major university generally have brilliant researchers, as well as brilliant teachers. Most faculty try to do their share of both, but the skills and temperaments required are very different, and it is rare to be exceptional at both.

In the end, it all tends to work out. Our colleges and universities are not hurting for customers.
