What do you think market making and EOD cash settlement entail? Nothing to do with trading on the short side. An MM can't trade on the short side and succeed. Neither can they do so on the long side. An MM succeeds only by getting on the other side of the public action and doing what the market, the rules, and rationality require. Why is it that you amateurs have such a hard problem with that? The answer is that you have no idea about how the market mechanism works, but you cop all these attitudes as though you do. The answer is that you need someone to blame for your losses.
