Tim, how much does performance really sell on the desktop these days? There will always be enthusiasts, but that's hardly a growth market, and even enthusiasts are more cost-concious these days.

AMD's resources are limited, perhaps even more so these days with such a diversified market. They need to cut away from desktops, where the margins continue to erode, and focus on the markets that still have healthy profit margins. That's the reason behind their huge push into servers with Opteron.
