Tim, you forgot Cyrix in your list of competition in the 90's. For a while, Cyrix's CPU was the only viable "Anything But Intel" alternative in the x86 space, as AMD was still stumbling with 486 clones and an impotent K5.

At least one regular on this thread should remember Fuchi Wu, "who loves Cyrix innovations," and whose fanaticism-to-intelligence ratio rivaled that of most AMDroids throughout history. He used to post prolificly, first on Usenet newsgroups, then on SI (including a cute dual-personality stunt that Elmer caught him in). Whatever happened to him?
