I saw a public television special last night that pointed out how our attempts to suppress forest fires in order to preserve the forest is actually counter to the goal. Forests need regular burn cycles to continue their natural balance. for example: The production of new giant redwood trees was completely stopped by the suppression of forest fires. Douglas Fir and pine trees were taking over until the forest service started to implement controlled burn practices. Just about everything here is under fire, not by plan but its all burning just the same.

The ability to commute to work from just about any distance has created a movement to housing communities throughout the forested regions. This adds to the pressure stop forest fires from ever occuring.
