If they didn't mean it, why didn't they publicly call the jerk who claimed they had signed it to account?

Because they're friends and people let their friends get away with murder rather than risk the friendship. Heck, I could tell you things friends of mine have done that I've overlooked that you wouldn't believe. I might never trust or respect or love them in the same way, but I usually carry on as though I did, in Nobody's Perfect mode, though it sometimes entails living with a residue of sadness for a long time. And as I told you, NYC is a small town. That has something to do with the whole odd thing. Circles are intertwined. It's bad enough when things get realigned because of divorces and other breakups. Start dropping people because they've behaved badly iyo, you're really screwing things up. There's a definite Austen meets Trollope meets Dickens meets Henry James NY subculture. [Add George Gissing, a lesser known but wonderful writer, and you've got it!] [Actually, remove all but Gissing and you have most of it.] It's not uninteresting, but it can sure render one cynical.

I suppose if you look closely enough at each situation, you would forgive it. You don't like French remarks dropped in, I know, but this is a good one, and means 'to understand all is to forgive all': Tout comprendre, c'est tout pardonner.

Since I provided the translation, no complaints will be entertained, Laz.

N is having lunch Monday with the one who hasn't "signed anything in nine years," maybe he'll say he has called the suspect; but I suspect no big deal will be made out of it. It's in the horse- has- been- stolen- already- so- what's- the- point category, anyway.

If I find someone else who 'signed' involuntarily, I shall come here and tell immediately!

BTW, I have an interesting piece by Alexander Cockburn about your hero, GWB. I'll be back later to provide you with some enjoyable leisure reading!

Sometime I'll tell you something absolutely awful and unforgivable that I did that some friends have had a hard time even pretending to forgive me for. They only put up with me because they love N, now. And of course for the standard reason, not wanting awkwardness in groups. OMG, it was awful. Shudder.
