With "friends" like this, you need enemies?

Because they're friends and people let their friends get away with murder rather than risk the friendship.
We see this right here on SI. All the time. :-)

Heck, I could tell you things friends of mine have done that I've overlooked that you wouldn't believe.
TELL ME! TELL ME! I love gossip! :-)

And as I told you, NYC is a small town.
Why do I find this hard to believe? Because there are only 8 million people there?

I live in SIlicon Gulch. There are dozens of well-known names in this valley I've never even seen. And there are aboutr 8 million people here.

Sometime I'll tell you something absolutely awful and unforgivable that I did that some friends have had a hard time even pretending to forgive me for. They only put up with me because they love N, now. And of course for the standard reason, not wanting awkwardness in groups. OMG, it was awful. Shudder.
