Hi Christopher,
There is an author from Seattle, you might know of, Timothy Egan, that writes about the Northwest.. That I like very much,. He is a very readable writer, that was, still is maybe, I don't know, the Seattle correspondent for the NY times....
I have read two books of his.. The one I pass on to you is called "The Good Rain".. About your neck of the woods primarily.. The other is about an unsolved murder in the Spokane area during prohibition.. Also a good read..
But "The Good Rain" looks at some history but goes on to examine the current.. "The plight of the natives, the grab for land and water..and takes us into the lives of the Pacific Northwest- mountain climbers and wine growers, fishermen and timberman, the city dweller, the native and the newcomer"
What he finds, and vividly conveys, is a land of unparalleled beauty caught in in a volatile struggle between conservation and development.. It is a world in which, for all it's conflicts, he senses the beginning of a "Pacific Century"...."
Anyway I ran into Egan's book, while looking for and finding an old book from the "National Geographic" called "Greece and Rome" , I need for reference.. So I thought I might pass it on..

P.S. BTW Tom Robbins gives him a nice rec on the jacket.... |
