NOKIA 1X phone comparisons! (You've already seen this Ramsey so you can ignore it)

Slacker and I have been comparing notes on Nokia 1X chip and 1xphone development.

Many here seemed to believe that Nokia would be "far behind" Qualcomm in 1X chipsets and phone development.

I would question this thesis after examining 1X phones currently certified by the FCC.

As a baseline for comparision. Here is the new (yet to be released KYO-2345) It is a tri-mode/dual band CDMA phone using Qualcomm Asics! It also has handset based A-GPS capability. (Notice parts are located on both the Front and Back side of the Main Board. Notice. There are allot of passive parts in this phone.

Now here is the single mode Voice Only/SMS 1900Mhz Nokia 6370 1X phone. Only 1 side of the board is populated, and only about 70% of the opposite side is populated. Notice, it only has 1 PCB assembly (page 5 of 9), in addition the BOM count is MUCH SMALLER than that of the KYO phone.

So you say.. PCSTEL.. Hey, the KYO is a tri-mode phone with Data, and the Nokia is a low end Voice-only single band phone. That is what the difference in BOM is... Which is what I thought until Slacker pointed out the the Nokia 6385 which is Tri-Band 1X with Data uses the exact same PCB board as the single mode Voice Only unit. In addition, it appears it uses almost all common parts from the single mode phone. If you compare the two. You will find what appears to be only a couple, and I do mean a couple of parts added to the single mode phone to make it a tri-mode phone w/ data.

The BOM count on the NOK 1X/data phone is Much Smaller than the yet to be released KYO2345 and occupies less board space!

Even more interesting. NOK has clearly beat Qualcomm's phone manufactures to the 1X Voice-Only market. Kyocera promised the 1X Voice-Only KYO-1135 for delivery in April. That phone has not shown up on the FCC web site as certified.
