China Unicom Says GSM Users Up 3.2% To 32.1 Million In May

HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- China Unicom Ltd. said Thursday the number of subscribers on its global system for mobile communications, or GSM, network grew 3.2% during May, outpacing the 2.4% growth at rival China Mobile (HK) Ltd. in the month to May 20 .
China Unicom, the listed unit of China 's number two cell phone operator, said it added 996,000 new GSM subscribers for a total of 32.125 million by May 31 . In the previous month it added 909,000 GSM users.
It also said it had 785,000 subscribers on its new code division multiple access, or CDMA, network by the end of the month, up 12% from 702,000 at the end of April. This was much slower growth than the 24% reported in April.
So far this year, Unicom has added 5.092 million GSM subscribers. The CDMA network was launched in January.
In May, the number of post-paid GSM subscribers increased 0.9% to 17.341 million, while the number of pre-paid users rose 6.0% to 14.784 million, meaning the latter now account for 46% of the total number of users.
