Amein, I see the struggle of the Palestenian people similar to the war of Independence in India against the British colonial rule. The Indians wanted the right to determine who their leaders will be, how would be taxed etc. etc. Hence they wanted that right to vote for their leaders. That they cherished democracy is evident today in that even though they may not have the riches but they have that burning desire to remain free and be democratic. So ar the Plaestenians. So the end/the goals of the Indian freedom movement and the Palestenian freedom movement remains the same.

Now the question is the means. India adopted the same means that the Palestenians are adopting currently. The Indian freedom fighters fought against the British, burned public buses, bombed courts and did everything to challenge and disrupt the British authority. Now the British called them terrorist. There were leaders like Netaji Subhash Bose etc, who came before Gandhi and advocated that style of violent struggle. (Reminds you of Arafat and the PLO, isn't it). Finally the British realized that it was time to go and that it was not to their benefit to remain in India if the people living in Britain had to remain prosperous. They did not want to drain all their money in fighting the Indians.

So they set out on finding a way out in a way that would save their face. So they started demanding that the violent Subhash Bose should go and they had him replaced by the more peaceful Gandhi. They had Gandhi arrested several times and staged it such that Gandhi came across as peaceful. They foisted Gandhi, negotiated the independence with him and finally left. I see the same thing happening here in Israel. Or at least I hope and the reason I say so is that the British were humane folks. I am not sure of the Israelis. So far they have exhibited barbaric behavior. Very inhuman. They refuse to stop and think what aspirations drive someone to leave his/her family folks behind and kill himself/herself. They are so selfish that the Israeli leaders are more concerned with those thst are killed. They are not interested in the source of that death and the destruction; namely the mind of the person who started the killing.

You, I and others do not want to do so. We are prosperous, we get to fulfill what we want since we have all the freedoms, we come here on SI and post at will. But does a normal Palestenian have all those? Heck no. Can we ensure that they like us are humans and need to have those basic needs which we have fulfilled?

At least Colin Powell who comes from an ancestry of oppression understands that and I hope is making slow progress is challenging the conscience of the world to ensure that the hopes and aspirations of the Palestenians are met.
