Lucent Technologies Softswitch Carries Live Network Traffic in Tiscali's Operations in France and Spain

MILAN, Italy--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 20, 2002--Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU - News) today announced that it has successfully deployed the Lucent Softswitch, APX(tm) 8000(tm) and MAX TNT® Universal Gateways for Tiscali in France and Spain, both country based subsidiaries of Tiscali SpA (Nuovo Mercato, Milan: TIS, Nouveau Marche, Paris: 005773).

The Lucent Softswitch solution is now carrying live network traffic in both countries.

The deployments enable the leading pan-European Internet Company to utilize the Lucent Softswitch Internet Call Diversion (ICD) solution to efficiently manage traffic on its networks. Tiscali can deploy live voice over IP (VoIP) traffic on the Lucent Softswitch and introduce revenue generating IP-based services to its residential and small and medium enterprise customers. Deployment of a single, converged network for voice and data services enables Tiscali to sustain a competitive cost advantage over carriers with separate voice and data networks, and enables Tiscali to introduce multimedia services.

The Lucent Softswitch is an important solution in the Lucent circuit-to-packet portfolio. It is the brains of the IP network controlling gateways and end-points using such industry protocols as H.248, session initiation protocol (SIP) and H.323. The programmable Softswitch allows carriers to deploy revenue-generating IP-based multimedia services. It is designed to meet the reliability, performance and scalability needs of large service providers and enables carriers to manage the convergence of voice and data traffic by bridging the IP world with the traditional, circuit-based voice network using SS7 signaling.

Lucent's APX 8000 and MAX TNT Universal Gateways provide service providers with a unique platform to offer the most advanced voice, fax and data services on any port at any time. These gateways support voice, data and fax calls on a single digital signal processor (DSP) card. With the carrier-grade Universal Gateways, service providers will be able to increase the reliability, scalability and performance of their networks while at the same time controlling their operation costs.

Tiscali's deployment of the Lucent Softswitch and Universal Gateways further strengthens Lucent's market leadership for next-generation voice technology. Lucent has shipped more than 6 million ports of Softswitch-enabled gateways -- more than any other vendor in the industry.

Last year, Lucent signed a pan-European contract and a general purchase agreement with Tiscali SpA to enable the ISP to develop its European network and introduce a new range of service offerings. Both deployments of the Lucent Softswitch and APX 8000 in France and Spain have been accompanied by full design, implementation and support by Lucent Technologies Worldwide Services.
