It is very hard to know which research is "worthless" and which isn't. Many times research that seemed arcane is later found to have wide ranging, and even lifesaving, implications. I am totally behind research scientists, and support their efforts- I merely think the system should have clearer tracks than it does at present. I don't think it does any good to force researchers to teach (and especially teach undergraduates) when they do not want to, and when their desire not to is clearly ascertainable by everyone, including their students. So rather than trying to decide which research is worthless, I would suggest instead that those who do not wish to teach, don't teach. That would be a great first step, imo.
