I find nothing to disagree with in that. If there are those who want to fund the research, fine, just don't pretend it is part of the cost of education. If there are PHDs who do not care to teach, or only care to teach those pursuing their specialty, fine, I would rather they did not teach freshmen. But I still think it is possible to prioritize research, and, in any case, I did not mean my comments to be directed primarily at research scientists or engineers. I was more thinking of the 800th dissertation on Shakespeare's "Troilus Andronicus" and the social composition of Elizabethan England as encoded in the play..........
