"If you don't do drugs," said Jonathon, 33, who did not want his last name used, "you're not going to enjoy it as much."

Does that statement sound as weird to anyone else as it does to me?

When I was young, I was out to dinner with my future family in law. Several of us were eating oysters on the halfshell, which I have always adored. My sister to be was a teenager and typically said "yuck" at the prospect of oysters and her father said she needed to develop a taste for them. I recall wondering at the time why one would make an effort to develop a taste for something that was not readily available, expensive, and potentially hazardous to one's health. My bewilderment is the same regarding why anyone would do something not clearly advantageous that requires drugs to enjoy.
