I don't think the CAtholic church was "tolerating" anything. I think what the Catholic church was doing was "shamefully hiding" child molesters- because they were terrified that if they took care of them confidence in the church would be shaken. That is actually what happens when intolerant people are afraid of looking bad. Because they are so worried about appearances, they cannot effectively acknowledge real problems. There is quite a difference between the two things- imo.
