If the students have approximately the same level of talent, the variable will be the effort put in. All that X and I were arguing was that among students in a tracked classroom, those that put in the effort should be able to get an A. If one presumes that the effort will be randomly distributed, one might find another bell curve. But if the teacher motivates most of them to work hard, one should expect a shift towards As and Bs. The difference should be based on a notion of how well material can be covered assuming a rigorous but achievable amount of work, versus how well it will be covered with a mediocre effort. That is "norming according to reasonable expectations".......
