I have a similar PC (a little more recent, but same amount of RAM). The way I deal with that is to activate the Resource Meter (Start--Programs--System Tools (I think) -- Resource Meter. This will give you two percentages that measure the extent to which the system's resources are being taken up. I find that it is usually due to lots of things that automatically load in the background. Most of these have an icon on the taskbar. Right click these icons and deactivate the programs. Then, hover the mouse pointer over the system resources bar (which has a green bar chart type of display). As you hover over it you will see two percentages displayed. Those percentages should go up each time you close off a program that is running in the background. Some programs are resource hogs on that system for some reason.

I think a few weeks ago there was some other info posted on this thread about programs using resources after they have been "closed"-- that may also be a problem.
