Such incidents were much more common in the past
they probably have nothing to do with abortion
mothers have always killed their children when desperate as all literature tells us

Medea killed out of malice
and Hettie (Adam Bede) killed in confusion and fear
and there have been many more in literature. Baby killing is not an uncommon topic, nor was it an uncommon crime. But think how many women would have gotten away with it. And of course many got away with killing children abusively as well, because medical and forensic sciences were pretty poor.
