I understand how painful it can be
there are so many of us who have lived with an alcoholic
maybe all those people who didn't have one need a support group because they missed out? :-)
I was adopted, so it helped put distance between my parents illnesses and myself
I knew I was not them, even as a child
and that they were not always who they thought they were, or wanted to be
but most importantly,
I knew I was me, and not them, and that was a really good thing

With distance and detachment, comes peace of a kind
