Dan, you are comparing an 8-way Sun Fire V880 machine with 32GB of memory against a 4-way Itanium 1 system with 8GB of memory. Since both memory size and the number of processors make a huge difference in enterprise applications, I hardly consider this an apples to apples comparison. 2.5x to 3x performance is good, but double the processors and add 4 times the memory, and it is going to cost a lot more. Besides, Sun's cost model is already far higher than any Itanium based one to begin with. And once you put Itanium 2 into the equation, Sun is likely to be at a big disadvantage.

Edit: This is the one that Intel will want to exceed (by at least 25%) if they want Itanium 2 and the IA-64 concept to succeed. I think they have a good chance, IMO.
